Parasites and persistent gut bugs

Feeling toxic

Although really a separate issue to detoxification we have to mention these nasties here, because if you have had either of our two least favourite hitch hikers on board then you will most certainly need a detox once these have been treated.

Blastocystis hominus and Dientamoeba fragilis are parasites that can infect the human digestive tract. Many people are shocked to learn that they are harbouring a parasite, but unfortunately these type of gut infections are incredibly common. Once we would have only expected to pick up these types of bugs while travelling, but now they are very commonly diagnosed in Australia.

While some people may only have very low levels of these parasites without too many symptoms most people suffer from a range of symptoms.

Symptoms of Parasite Infestation Microbiome

  • Bloating
  • Abdominal distention
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Wind
  • Nausea
  • Indigestion
  • Fatigue
  • Immune system problems
  • Rashes, skin irritation
  • Malaise
  • Weight loss in some people , weight gain in others
  • Brain fog

We generally identify these parasites with a Comprehensive Stool and Digestive Analysis (CDSA). Both Blastocystis and D.fragilis are incredibly resistant to treatment and they usually require a combined approach using natural medicines to prepare the gut,  antimicrobial treatment with either herbal medicines or antibiotics, followed by a full detox and gut support program to restore gut health. This may require extended support, but the results will be worth it!
